How to Obtain China Visa for Visiting Kailash Mansarovar

Mount kailash and Lake Mansarovar are situated in the autonomous region of Tibet, China. In order to travel to Tibet all foreign nationals have to get China visa from designated China Embassy or High Commission. Before applying for visa one need to have Tibet Travel Permits which are issued by different authorities in Tibet and should be applied well in advance. Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are situated in the restricted area the permit for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is very complicated and time taking.

For travelling to Kailash Mansarovar, other than the normal Tibet entry permit there are also three different kind of permits which the traveller require to obtain. These permits are Alien’s Travel Permit, Foreign Affair Permit and Military Permit. All these permits are issued by different governmental departments. Such permits can be obtained only through authorised agents and unauthorised agents. Once the travellers have receive the permit they can apply for China visa in Chinese Embassy or High Commission.

Grant of visa to travel to Tibet for Kailash Yatra is totally at the discretion of the Chinese Embassy. The visa must be applied by the authorised tour operator in the shape group application alongwith original passport and required Chinese Visa Fee. Usually for Indian travellers the visa application is accepted at Chinese Embassy in Delhi and the embassy takes 4 to 5 working days for visa process, after receiving the Kailash Yatra visa application. For NRIs and other foreign national visa application is accepted by China Embassy in Kathmandu Nepal and the embassy takes 2-3 working days for the process of visa. It is to be noted that Indian nationals do not need a visa to enter Nepal but NRIs and foreigners require a Nepalese visa to enter Nepal, which is available easily at immigration upon arrival against the visa charges.

Once the visa is granted, you can travel to the restricted areas of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar as per the prescribed tour itinerary only, with the other group members. In the even you wish to travel out of Tibet due to emergency by leaving the trip in between, you have to get pay at Tibet border for splitting the permit and also other penalties for visa.
